Man arrested in Mpumalanga for filmed assault on grandmother
Police in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, have arrested a man suspected of violently assaulting his grandmother in the Nkomazi municipality. The arrest, made on Sunday, June 7, 2026, followed the circulation of a video on social media that captured the entire attack.
The incident took place at a tavern in eMagogeni. The footage shows the suspect repeatedly punching and kicking the victim before striking her with a beer crate. In the video, a third person can be heard laughing as the elderly woman, severely injured, lies on the ground unable to defend herself.

Dispute over pension money sparked the assault
According to initial police findings, the altercation stemmed from a financial dispute. The elderly woman had noticed that her pension money—meant for groceries and electricity bills—had gone missing. She went to the tavern to confront her grandson, who then attacked her.
The video’s rapid spread, along with swift action by local police, led to the suspect’s quick identification and location. He was taken into provisional custody and is expected to appear in a provincial court soon to face charges of assault and grievous bodily harm.
