Mali’s healthcare transformation: a nationwide hospital initiative
president goïta initiates major hospital construction: 15 new facilities planned!
Bamako, November 10, 2025. General Assimi Goïta, serving as the President of the Transition, officially inaugurated the Presidential Emergency Hospital Project by laying its foundational stone. This significant event, hosted at the Korofina Reference Health Center in Bamako’s Commune I, signals the commencement of an ambitious undertaking designed to overhaul Mali’s healthcare infrastructure and services.
Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo Touré, the Minister of Health and Social Development, highlighted that this initiative directly follows the recommendations from the December 2024 General States of Health. These earlier discussions underscored the critical need to enhance healthcare accessibility and elevate the standard of medical services across the nation.
national hospital system overhaul and transformation
The Minister elaborated that this project aims for a comprehensive “modernization and restructuring” of the hospital network. Key components include establishing 15 new hospitals and converting existing Reference Health Centers (CSREF) within the Bamako district into fully-fledged District Hospitals. This ambitious construction effort, entirely supported by the national budget, is slated for completion within 12 months for facilities in Bamako and 24 months for those located in regional areas.
The Presidential Emergency Hospital Project encompasses three primary strategic pillars:
- Upgrading the Reference Health Centers across Bamako’s seven arrondissements to function as new district hospitals.
- Establishing brand-new district hospitals in the towns of Bla and Kangaba.
- Developing state-of-the-art regional hospitals in key locations such as San, Koutiala, Bougouni, Dioïla, Nioro, Bandiagara, and Koulikoro.
These advanced healthcare facilities will be outfitted with cutting-edge medical technology, boast expanded inpatient capacities, and offer a range of specialized services. Notably, hospitals in Bamako’s 1st and 6th arrondissements will feature dedicated hemodialysis units.
project priorities and oversight
Concluding the ceremony, the President of the Transition reaffirmed the pivotal role of health in national development. He tasked the Minister of Health with ensuring uninterrupted public services throughout the construction phase and strictly adhering to the agreed project timelines. Furthermore, he underscored the profound humanitarian goals of this initiative: to deliver high-quality medical care closer to communities, minimize the need for external medical transfers, and alleviate pressure on current healthcare facilities.
