Mali’s environment fortnight: UNESCO joins 27th edition launch in Bamako

This 27th edition aims to unite national initiatives to increase community awareness about preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

The UNESCO office in Mali attended the official launch ceremony for the 27th Environment Fortnight on Saturday, 6 June 2026, in Bamako. The organisation’s delegation was led by its Representative, Mr. Ali Mohamed Sinane.

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Minister of State for Economy and Finance, Mr. Alousséni Sanou, on behalf of the Prime Minister. The event gathered numerous government officials, including environment ministers from the AES confederation (Burkina Faso and Niger), alongside representatives from national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society, the private sector, and the media.

Scheduled from 5 to 15 June 2026, the fortnight will center on two main themes:

  • Climate crisis and solutions for a safer, more resilient and sustainable future, linked to World Environment Day;
  • Pastures: recognize, respect, restore, referencing the International Day against Desertification and Drought.

Through its participation, UNESCO reiterates its commitment alongside the Malian government to boost awareness, promote sound environmental practices, and support the implementation of concrete actions for sustainable and resilient development.
