The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has firmly rejected claims that Yann Vezilier, a French diplomat sentenced to 20 years in Mali, was involved in any destabilization efforts. In a statement following the verdict, officials emphasized that the accusations against their agent are “groundless.” The Quai d’Orsay reiterated that Vezilier was engaged in legitimate security cooperation activities and that France played no part—directly or indirectly—in any plot against Mali’s government.

According to judicial sources, the 20-year sentence imposed on Vezilier also includes a 20-year ban from entering Mali and a fine of €5,400. The trial took place yesterday before the specialized criminal chamber focused on counterterrorism and organized crime, with the verdict announced today.

Charges of conspiracy

Vezilier, who was stationed at the French embassy in Bamako, was arrested on August 13, 2025, during a joint operation involving Mali’s State Security (SE) and military intelligence. The operation also led to the detention of several Malian military officers, now dismissed from service, who remain unprosecuted. These officers stand accused of orchestrating an espionage network and conspiracy aimed at overthrowing Mali’s transitional institutions. Since 2012, Mali has grappled with severe insecurity driven by jihadist violence linked to Al-Qaïda and the Islamic State, as well as communal armed groups. The country is currently governed by a military junta that seized power following two coups in 2020 and 2021. Under its leadership, Bamako has shifted its political and military alliances away from Western partners, including France, in favor of closer ties with Russia.
