Fresh waves of violence in Niger’s southwestern region have forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes, following a spate of coordinated terrorist assaults that struck villages in mid-July. Local authorities and eyewitness accounts confirm the displacement, marking one of the most significant population shifts in this relatively calm but strategically vital area.
The attacks, unprecedented in the Dosso region—a border area adjacent to both Nigeria and Bénin—have escalated concerns over the growing reach of armed factions operating in the Sahel. Since 2025, this zone has increasingly become a hotspot for violence linked to Al-Qaïda-affiliated groups and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, according to conflict monitoring data.
Survivors, as seen in footage aired by national television, have sought temporary refuge in Tahoua, a neighboring area close to the Nigerian border. Meanwhile, hundreds more have relocated to Dogondoutchi, situated roughly 100 kilometers from Loga, where basic services are now under strain to accommodate the influx.

Niger faces growing humanitarian crisis amid rising displacement
As of 2025, the United Nations reported that over 450,000 people were internally displaced across Niger, with the majority concentrated in three regions long affected by insurgent violence. The Tillabéri region, bordering Burkina Faso and Mali, hosts nearly half of these displaced individuals, followed by Diffa in the southeast and Tahoua in the central-east.
On July 17, a military outpost in western Niger came under attack, resulting in 16 fatalities and 23 injuries among soldiers, while 15 assailants were neutralized. These incidents reflect a decade-long pattern of deadly assaults carried out by the Islamic State in the Sahel and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaïda affiliate.
The escalation of violence in the southwest highlights the persistent threat posed by armed groups in the Sahel, exacerbating an already fragile humanitarian situation in a region struggling to recover from years of instability.
