Gabon’s new tax breaks for electric vehicles to drive sustainable mobility
Gabon is significantly enhancing its framework of fiscal incentives designed to promote sustainable mobility. The country’s Rectifying Finance Law (LFR) 2026 now includes a crucial Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption on both the importation and commercialization of electric vehicles. This measure is a key addition to the General Tax Code, broadening the scope of operations that qualify for VAT relief. By lowering the tax burden associated with acquiring these vehicles, the government aims to stimulate their introduction into the national market and encourage economic operators to invest in this nascent sector.
Specifically, the updated Article 210 of the General Tax Code, as amended by LFR 2026, explicitly lists “the import and commercialization of electric vehicles” among the VAT-exempt transactions. This provision applies equally to vehicles entering the national territory and those offered for sale within the Gabonese market. From a customs perspective, this reform is designed to alleviate the overall cost of importation, though the legislation does not stipulate a separate exemption for customs duties. The primary fiscal advantage is centered on VAT, which has been identified as the core mechanism to improve access to these environmentally friendly vehicles.
A push for sustainable mobility
Government officials have clearly articulated their commitment to accelerating the transition towards cleaner transportation through targeted fiscal stimuli. The overarching goal is to make electric vehicles more competitive against traditional internal combustion engine models, foster the development of a domestic electromobility market, and progressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to the transport sector. This strategic direction aligns with a broader environmental policy, further evidenced by the introduction of a carbon contribution and additional environmental taxes also outlined in the same Rectifying Finance Law.
This initiative sends a strong signal to dealerships, investors, and consumers alike regarding the government’s dedication to supporting the energy transition. The VAT exemption is expected to significantly boost the appeal of electric vehicles, simultaneously contributing to the modernization of Gabon’s national automotive fleet. Furthermore, this reform could pave the way for the future development of essential infrastructure, such as charging networks, and reinforce Gabon’s commitment to achieving greener growth and economic development that harmonizes performance with environmental preservation.
