Gabon ends EU fishing deal to boost local industry

Gabon / Gabon has opted not to renew its fisheries partnership agreement with the European Union (EU), which was set to expire on June 28, 2026.

This strategic move reflects the government’s determination to reclaim greater control over its marine resources while maximizing economic benefits for the nation.

Was Gabon shortchanged?

The arrangement drew criticism in Libreville due to its modest financial returns, estimated at around €2.6 million annually (approximately 1.7 billion FCFA), widely seen as disproportionate to the volume of fish caught in Gabonese waters.

Officials now aim to prioritize local tuna processing to stimulate job creation, industrial investment, and domestic value addition.

A more balanced partnership ahead

This shift aligns with a broader strategy of economic sovereignty and blue economy development.

While negotiations with Brussels remain open, Gabon is unequivocally pushing for a more equitable and economically advantageous arrangement.
