Gabon and France Unveil New Era in Relations

The state visit of President Oligui Nguema to France marked a significant turning point in Franco-Gabonese relations, as the two nations agreed to build a new partnership based on equality.

After 42 years without a high-level diplomatic visit, Gabon and France have decided to revitalize their economic ties by breaking away from past practices that favored foreign companies at the expense of local resources. The Gabonese president’s commitment to transform the country’s economy and promote local production will be key in this new partnership.

The French presidency was seen as a chance for President Oligui Nguema to demonstrate his sovereignty over his country’s natural resources, which have been exploited by foreign companies for decades. The visit also saw the transformation of manganese with French company Eramet, with an investment plan set to increase production capacity by 2031.

The partnership is seen as a major victory for Gabon, which will gain greater control over its economy and resources. However, some have expressed concerns that the new agreement may not fully meet Gabon’s expectations, particularly in terms of the pace of implementation.
