French national detained in Senegal amid anti-lgbtq+ crackdown

A French national has been taken into custody in Dakar as part of a broader wave of arrests targeting same-sex relations in Senegal.

The individual, a 30-year-old engineer residing in the country, faces charges including unnatural acts, criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and attempted HIV transmission. His arrest occurred during a period of intensified enforcement of laws against LGBTQ+ individuals.

Diplomatic response from France

The French embassy in Dakar has confirmed it is closely monitoring the case. Consular officials have conducted four visits to the detainee to ensure his protection under international law. French authorities are also maintaining communication with both the detainee’s family and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris.

Legal backdrop in Senegal

Earlier this month, Senegal enacted a stricter law imposing up to a decade in prison for engaging in same-sex relationships. This legislative change has drawn international concern, particularly regarding the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. France has reiterated its stance in favor of global decriminalization of homosexuality and the elimination of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
