Diplomatic immunity stripped as Malian judiciary delivers harsh sentence

The individual, identified as Yann V., held diplomatic status and was stationed at the French embassy in Bamako before his arrest. Malian authorities allege he operated as part of an espionage network aimed at destabilizing the transitional government and plotting a coup d’état. The case has already seen multiple Malian officers detained pending trial.

In addition to his prison term, the French national faces a 20-year entry ban to Mali and a fine exceeding €5,400. The verdict was announced following judicial proceedings on June 5, as confirmed by multiple court sources.

France dismisses allegations as bilateral relations deteriorate

Paris immediately rejected the accusations as unfounded when the officer was detained in August 2025. France responded by suspending all counterterrorism cooperation efforts with Mali and expelling two Malian diplomats stationed in the country.

A growing rift between Bamako and Western allies

The sentencing coincides with Mali’s accelerating pivot away from traditional Western partners. Since the 2020 and 2021 military takeovers, the current junta has deepened political and military ties with Russia, replacing France as its primary international ally.
