France-Morocco ties celebrated in Rabat on Bastille Day
The French Embassy in Rabat marked Bastille Day with a high-profile reception, bringing together Moroccan officials, business leaders, civil society representatives and media figures. The event underscored the deepening partnership between France and Morocco, now entering a new phase of strategic cooperation.
The gathering was presided over by Philippe Lalliot, France’s newly appointed ambassador to Rabat, who delivered his first major address since presenting his credentials to King Mohammed VI in early June. In his speech, Ambassador Lalliot highlighted the ‘quiet strength’ of Morocco—a nation rooted in rich heritage yet firmly oriented toward progress and modernity.
During his remarks, he reflected on his recent travels across Morocco, from Casablanca and Tangier to Marrakech and Laâyoune, where he inaugurated the country’s newest Alliance Française center. The diplomat praised the cultural initiative as a symbol of France’s commitment to expanding educational and artistic exchanges with Morocco.
Lalliot also paid tribute to the enduring human bonds between the two nations, citing spontaneous moments of solidarity between Moroccan and French fans during a recent World Cup quarterfinal. Such displays, he noted, reflect the unique depth of the bilateral relationship.
On the diplomatic front, the ambassador reaffirmed France’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, echoing President Emmanuel Macron’s 2024 letter to King Mohammed VI. He stressed that Paris views the future of the Sahara as inextricably tied to Morocco’s sovereignty, aligning with the Kingdom’s long-standing position.
The event also celebrated the robust economic ties between the two countries, with France remaining Morocco’s top foreign investor and largest employer. Security cooperation was highlighted as another cornerstone, with Rabat playing a pivotal role in combating terrorism, drug trafficking and irregular migration—a commitment recognized by French authorities.
A major milestone is on the horizon: the 15th High-Level Meeting between Morocco and France, scheduled for July 16 in Rabat. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will lead a delegation of twelve ministers, marking one of the most significant high-level exchanges in years.
The diplomatic momentum continues to build, with nearly forty ministerial visits exchanged over the past two years, signaling a revitalized political dialogue. Looking ahead, both nations are preparing to sign a historic friendship treaty—a first for France with a non-European partner. The agreement is expected to be finalized during the King’s upcoming state visit to France, further cementing the alliance between Rabat and Paris.
