Initially, Toulouse FC rejected an offer close to €33 million for Methalie earlier in the week. However, a revised proposal of approximately €30 million—including potential bonuses—was accepted by the French club. This adjustment, with a higher fixed fee and structured bonus clauses, allowed the deal to be completed.

The young defender, who will travel to England this Saturday, is expected to complete his medical examination shortly after. His departure represents a significant financial boost for Toulouse FC, following another major sale—Emersonn’s transfer to Ipswich Town for nearly €32 million.

Methalie emerges as a rising star in French football

As reported in late July, Methalie has already agreed to a five-year contract with Sunderland. A product of Toulouse’s youth academy, the left-back has quickly become a key figure for the French Under-21 national team, earning four caps.

During the 2025-2026 season, Methalie made 30 appearances across all competitions for Toulouse, contributing two goals and two assists. His performance caught the attention of several foreign clubs during the summer transfer window, but Sunderland’s ambitious project under manager Régis Le Bris ultimately secured his signature.
