Côte d’Ivoire government reiterates “zero tolerance” on fgm after five girls mutilated in bongouanou

Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Women, Family and Children has forcefully reiterated the government’s unwavering «zero tolerance» policy against female genital mutilation (FGM). This strong reaffirmation follows the brutal circumcision of five young girls in Bongouanou, according to an official statement.

The harrowing incident unfolded during the night of Tuesday, June 30, 2026, within the Dioulakro neighborhood of Kangandi village, part of the Bongouanou commune. The victims, ranging in age from three to nine years, endured a practice described as «extremely violent.» This barbaric act resulted in significant hemorrhages, urinary retention, and severe psychological trauma for these minors.

Prompt action was taken following an anonymous tip-off. Teams from the regional Directorate of Women, Family and Children, alongside the Judicial Protection Service for Children and Youth (SPJEJ) and the Bongouanou police station, immediately mobilized to rescue the children.

After receiving urgent care at the Bongouanou Departmental Public Hospital (EPHD), the five young girls are now safe and secure in a specialized center operating under the ministry’s protection. Here, they are undergoing comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support to aid in their recovery.

On the judicial front, law enforcement officers apprehended two suspects swiftly following their intervention. Competent authorities have been engaged to identify and ensure all individuals involved in this heinous act, both perpetrators and accomplices, are brought before the courts.

The ministry unequivocally reminds the public that female genital mutilation remains a grave criminal offense, subject to severe penalties under Ivorian legislation. This firm condemnation aligns with national commitments to eradicate gender-based violence (GBV), notably reiterated by First Lady Dominique Ouattara on June 13, 2026.

In the face of this persistent scourge, authorities are urging the populace to maintain heightened vigilance and to systematically report any act or attempted female genital mutilation.
