Canaries Parliament commends Moroccan consul’s contributions
The President of the Canaries Parliament, Astrid Pérez, met this Wednesday with Moroccan Consul General in the Canaries, Fatiha El Kamouri, marking the conclusion of her four-year term dedicated to deepening institutional collaboration between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
During the meeting, Pérez expressed her gratitude for El Kamouri’s contributions and emphasized the value of bilateral dialogue in fostering mutual understanding. She wished El Kamouri continued success in her future professional endeavors.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi descent, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao for six years, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community across the islands.
The outgoing consul’s tenure has been widely credited with significantly enhancing relations between the Canary Islands government, led by Fernando Clavijo, and Morocco. Clavijo’s unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara reflects not only diplomatic alignment but also a strategic recognition of shared security interests and substantial economic opportunities.
Beyond formal diplomacy, concrete actions have defined this partnership. Clavijo’s visits to Morocco and the signing of multiple collaboration agreements across key sectors exemplify this new dynamic. A notable highlight was the reception of a delegation from Souss-Massa in Las Palmas, led by Karim Achengli and over 80 business leaders, transforming political commitments into tangible projects.
The Canary Islands are now positioned as a natural partner for Morocco’s development, moving beyond divisive influences to embrace collaboration on strategic fronts. Shared priorities include water desalination expertise, infrastructure management, and technological innovation—areas where Canarian experience aligns perfectly with Morocco’s southern provinces.
Businesses from both regions are increasingly engaging in joint ventures, reinforcing the foundation for lasting peace and shared prosperity. This evolving relationship underscores the critical role played by Fatiha El Kamouri’s efforts over the past four years.
