Calls for calm amid constitutional debate in democratic republic of Congo
With political tensions rising over the prospect of constitutional reform in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Voix des sans voix (VSV) has urged President Félix Tshisekedi to take decisive action to calm the situation. In a statement released in Kinshasa on June 24, the human rights organization warned that the current climate risks escalating into broader instability and human rights violations if immediate measures are not taken to defuse the crisis.
President’s role in restoring stability
The VSV emphasized that President Tshisekedi, as head of state, holds a unique position to foster national unity and ease tensions in a country already grappling with persistent insecurity in the eastern regions. The organization called on authorities to reinforce messages of cohesion and discourage rhetoric that could deepen divisions among citizens.
Unity over division
The VSV stressed that political leaders across the spectrum must exercise restraint to prevent further escalation. It argued that national interest should always take precedence over partisan or communal considerations, particularly during this delicate period marked by security challenges in the East.
According to the human rights group, inflammatory speeches—whether political, ethnic, or regional—risk exacerbating fractures within society. It firmly asserted that no affiliation should supersede the collective well-being of the nation.
Commitment to democratic values
The VSV concluded by urging all political actors to uphold democratic principles, human rights, and fundamental freedoms. It underscored that the country’s stability hinges on leaders and their supporters prioritizing dialogue and accountability over divisive tactics.
In its view, a proactive intervention by the President to promote calm could help prevent further deterioration of the political climate and safeguard the nation’s future.
