Burkina Faso ends diplomatic presence in France amid tensions

Ouagadougou has officially closed its embassy in Paris, signaling a decisive break in diplomatic relations with France. All twelve Burkinabe diplomats stationed in the French capital have returned home, where they were greeted by Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

Upon their return, the diplomats handed over the national flag that flew over the embassy as well as the keys to the diplomatic premises. This symbolic act marks the formal closure of Burkina Faso’s diplomatic representation in France. Authorities have also dismissed rumors suggesting that some diplomats had sought asylum.

The decision follows the announcement on June 26 of the rupture in diplomatic ties between Burkina Faso and France. In line with the principle of reciprocity, French diplomats had already left Burkina Faso in early July, giving Burkinabe representatives a set deadline to leave French territory.

Ouagadougou justified the rupture by citing what it describes as France’s « relentless activism » against Burkina Faso’s interests. Paris, in turn, condemned the move as « hostile and unfounded, » expressing regret over the deterioration of relations between the two nations.

This rupture is part of a broader shift that began with the rise of Captain Ibrahim Traoré to power in September 2022. Since then, Burkinabe authorities have progressively distanced themselves from their former French partner. The withdrawal of French forces from Burkinabe soil marked a turning point in this diplomatic realignment.

In parallel, Ouagadougou has actively pursued new partnerships with countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Iran, particularly in security, economic cooperation, and international relations.

The closure of Burkina Faso’s embassy in Paris represents an unprecedented event in recent bilateral history. It underscores the profound reshaping of diplomatic alliances undertaken by Burkinabe authorities and ushers in a new phase in relations between Ouagadougou and Paris, one that will be closely monitored on the global stage.
