Bénin’s President Wadagni strengthens ties with Sahel allies

Since taking office on 24 May 2026, Beninese President Romuald Wadagni has embarked on a pivotal diplomatic mission to Niamey and Ouagadougou. His first foreign visit as head of state signals a strategic effort to restore and strengthen relations between Benin and the Alliance of Sahel States.

This historic visit marks a significant shift in regional diplomacy. Wadagni becomes the first Beninese leader to travel to Niger following the political transition that brought General Abdourahamane Tiani to power on 26 July 2023, after the removal of former President Mohamed Bazoum.

While previous administrations had initiated dialogue—culminating in a working visit by a Nigerien delegation to Cotonou in July 2024—progress stalled. The closure of borders between Benin and Niger has since imposed severe economic strain, disrupting trade flows and restricting the movement of people across both nations.

Before his Sahel tour, President Wadagni made his maiden official visit abroad on 1 June 2026, choosing Nigeria—Benin’s largest trading partner and a key regional ally—as his destination.

The timing of this diplomatic engagement underscores the urgency of reopening channels of cooperation in a region facing complex security and economic challenges. Restoring stability and economic ties between Benin, Niger, and Burkina Faso remains a top priority for the new administration.
