Beninese president launches diplomatic tour to Senegal, Mali and Guinea-Bissau

The President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, today begins a working visit of friendship and collaboration that will take him consecutively to Senegal, Mali, and Guinea-Bissau. This official journey marks a new proactive chapter in the good-neighbourliness diplomacy and economic integration strategy pursued by the Beninese head of state within the West African region.

Consolidating the UEMOA axis

These trips are part of a broad presidential tour targeting member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). By meeting his counterparts in Dakar, Bamako, and Bissau, Romuald Wadagni aims to strengthen ties with historic partners who share with Bénin a common monetary destiny through the Franc CFA and the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO).

At the heart of discussions with the highest authorities of these three countries are several strategic topics:

  • Economic and trade cooperation: Boosting bilateral trade flows and harmonising growth policies in the face of global macroeconomic shocks.
  • Intercommunity solidarity: Reinforcing human and cultural bonds among peoples of the sub-region to foster integration beyond the mere institutional framework.
  • Regional security: Exchanging views on cross-border security challenges, a crucial issue for the stability of the entire West African zone.

The strategic choice of multilateralism

This series of visits follows an exceptionally active diplomatic period in early June, which had already taken the head of state to Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire.

By multiplying these face-to-face meetings with his peers, President Wadagni reaffirms the priority orientation of his foreign policy: making direct dialogue and the strengthening of community institutions the primary lever for prosperity and stability for Bénin and its African partners.
