Bénin: Wadagni’s seven-year term begins with poverty and security focus
Just days after taking office, Romuald Wadagni, the newly elected President of Bénin, successor to Patrice Talon, convened his first-ever Council of Ministers on May 28, 2026. This inaugural session marked the official start of his seven-year mandate, setting the stage for the priorities and guiding principles that will shape his leadership through 2033.
Two key priorities emerged during the meeting. The first centers on tackling extreme poverty and bridging development gaps between Bénin‘s municipalities. Wadagni emphasized the need for a more ambitious regional development strategy to help underdeveloped areas catch up. The second priority focuses on national security, with the President instructing the government to prioritize territorial protection amid ongoing regional instability.
The President also introduced a new governance rhythm. The Council of Ministers will now meet monthly, on the first Wednesday, while the Interministerial Committee will convene twice a month, on the first and third Mondays. Additional thematic Cabinet meetings will fill the gaps, ensuring closer oversight of sector-specific policies. This structured approach reflects a commitment to discipline and consistency in steering the nation’s affairs.
Closing the meeting, Wadagni urged his government to begin work with urgency, stressing that the quality of execution will directly impact living conditions for the people. This first Council of Ministers set the tone for a governance model centered on results, equitable development, and national cohesion—challenges that will define Bénin’s path forward in this new seven-year term.
