Benin appoints Claudy Siar as presidential cultural envoy
In a strategic move to bolster cultural diplomacy, Benin has appointed renowned media personality Claudy Siar as Special Envoy for Culture, Media, and National Visibility. The announcement was made on June 3, 2026, by President Romuald Wadagni, marking a significant shift for the panafricanist figure.
The veteran broadcaster, best known for hosting Couleurs Tropicales on RFI since 1995, brings over three decades of experience to his new role. His departure from RFI in March 2026 coincided with the end of his contract and the discontinuation of his iconic program—a decision he attributed to his panafricanist stance and critiques of Western policies. RFI, however, cited a strategic realignment toward new musical programming as the reason for the change.
Siar’s transition from international radio to national service reflects Benin’s commitment to amplifying its cultural voice on the global stage. His appointment comes at a time when the country is prioritizing soft power initiatives to enhance its international profile.
Before joining the presidential team, Siar had already embarked on a new venture with NewWorld TV, where he was set to launch NewWorld Mix and NewWorld Muzik—channels dedicated to African music and cultural exchange. This move underscores his enduring dedication to promoting African talent and narratives.
The appointment has been widely welcomed by cultural advocates, who view Siar’s leadership as a bridge between Benin’s rich heritage and modern global engagement. As Special Envoy, he is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s cultural policies and strengthening its media presence abroad.
