Barcelona has imposed a firm 48-hour deadline to successfully complete the acquisition of Manchester City’s midfield maestro, Rodri. The Catalan giants are aggressively pursuing a definitive agreement, aiming to present the Spanish international during the upcoming Joan Gamper Trophy match.

Negotiations between the two European football powerhouses have reached a critical juncture as both clubs endeavor to bridge the valuation gap. Manchester City is reportedly demanding a comprehensive package approaching 80 million euros (equivalent to £69 million) to sanction the midfielder’s departure.

Barcelona’s initial official bid, totaling €60 million plus an additional €10 million in bonuses, was rebuffed by Manchester City. A subsequent revised proposal, increasing the offer to €75 million, also failed to facilitate the transfer, leading to intensified discussions structured over the past weekend.

The primary obstacle in the ongoing discussions remains the precise economic framework of the transfer. City’s objective is to maximize the guaranteed portion of the transfer fee, while Barcelona is striving to limit its upfront guaranteed expenditure.

Both clubs are currently evaluating two main compromise formulas to achieve the required valuation. One proposed structure involves €70 million in fixed payments coupled with reduced bonuses, whereas another outlines €65 million as a fixed sum, complemented by €15 million in performance-related add-ons.

Crucially, Rodri has unequivocally expressed his strong desire to depart England and has made a transfer to Barcelona his top priority. With alternative interest from Real Madrid now entirely dismissed, the midfielder’s clear stance has provided the Blaugrana with significant confidence throughout the negotiation process.

Rodri recently returned to England to commence pre-season preparations with Manchester City, having requested a brief extension to resolve his future. He intends to regain match fitness with City, even though his tenure in Manchester could prove short-lived.

Barcelona’s management considers City’s valuation somewhat elevated, particularly given that the midfielder has only one year remaining on his current contract. However, the Catalan board acknowledges that it must meet the English club’s financial demands to secure his immediate signature.

President Joan Laporta is now set to directly intervene in the concluding stages of these complex negotiations. Barcelona’s hierarchy is hopeful that Laporta’s direct involvement will facilitate the finalization of an agreement either over the weekend or, at the latest, by Monday.

Should Barcelona successfully meet its self-imposed deadline, Rodri is expected to travel to Catalonia shortly after the agreement’s conclusion. The club anticipates his participation in his inaugural training session on Tuesday, ahead of his anticipated appearance at the Joan Gamper Trophy presentation.

The acquisition of this pivotal midfielder will significantly influence Barcelona’s financial planning and the club’s remaining salary cap allowance under La Liga regulations. Once the final transfer cost for Rodri is precisely quantified, the sporting management team will shift its focus to addressing other pressing priorities within the transfer market.
