Algeria launches 40 MW solidarity power plant in Chad, following Niger project
Algeria continues its concrete acts of solidarity with African nations in need. On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Chad’s Prime Minister Allamaye Halina jointly presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Algerian-Chadian solidarity power plant, which will have a production capacity of 40 megawatts. This comes just days after Ghrieb inaugurated a similar 40 MW Algerian-Nigerien solidarity plant in Gorou Banda, Niamey. Both plants are gifts from Algeria to Chad and Niger, respectively.
Algeria, which played a key role in Africa’s decolonization, now channels its solidarity drive toward the economic and social development of former colonised countries facing difficulties due to unequal international relations dominated by neocolonial practices. The Sahel-Saharan region – Algeria’s natural extension – is particularly concerned, with regional and African integration as a corollary.
It is worth recalling that Algeria has endowed its Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development (AICA) with one billion dollars to fund projects across Africa.
In his speech at the ceremony, Sifi Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria’s full commitment to continue supporting the Republic of Chad – a brother country – in its development process through know-how transfer, capacity building, and sharing of successful experiences accumulated by Algeria’s national institutions in energy, mining, industry, and infrastructure. Regarding the power plant project, Ghrieb stated that it carries deep economic, social, and human dimensions, as it contributes to strengthening Chad’s energy capacities and supports its development efforts. He emphasised that the project embodies the unwavering political will of the leaders of both brother countries and translates on the ground the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his brother, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad, aiming to elevate Algerian-Chadian relations to a solid strategic partnership based on active solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.
The Prime Minister conveyed to Chadian authorities and the brotherly Chadian people the greetings of President Tebboune, as well as his constant commitment to promoting fraternal ties between the two peoples and strengthening bilateral cooperation to achieve common goals for a more integrated and prosperous African space.
Decided by President Tebboune, this project materialises the first fruits of the new dynamic resulting from Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026 and the important talks he held with his brother President Tebboune. Those talks led to the conclusion of ambitious cooperation agreements and programmes covering various vital sectors.
Earlier on Monday, Sifi Ghrieb was received in N’Djamena by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. The Prime Minister, carrying a message from President Tebboune, arrived in Chad for an official visit aimed at strengthening fraternal ties and bilateral cooperation and partnership.
