Recent reports highlight a growing backlash against CAF’s ruling. According to sports newspaper AS, Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-organized tournaments, protesting the handling of the situation. The club asserts that the decision against Senegal is “unjust, politically motivated, and goes against the spirit of sportsmanship.”
Beyond Pharco FC, a multitude of other Egyptian and Algerian clubs have shown solidarity with Senegal, hinting at potential future boycotts of continental competitions. Prominent teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa and Tanzania’s Simba SC have labeled the verdict “disgraceful,” warning that it could establish a perilous precedent for the future of African football.
The controversy stems from CAF’s prior judgment that Senegal had forfeited the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco with a 0-3 score. The official ruling stated that Senegal was found in violation of regulations for abandoning the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regular time.
What intensified the dispute was the fact that the match actually resumed following a 10-minute stoppage. Senegal returned to the field, maintaining their 1-0 lead after extra time courtesy of a goal from Pape Gueye, and even celebrated lifting the trophy in Rabat on January 18.
However, following a formal complaint lodged by Morocco, CAF unexpectedly altered the match outcome, declaring Morocco the 3-0 winner and awarding the championship title to the host nation.
This abrupt decision sent shockwaves throughout the global football community. French sports daily L’Équipe described it as one of the most “bizarre and contentious” rulings in contemporary football history, while The Athletic emphasized that such a precedent was unheard of in a continental championship.
Many football pundits and analysts have also questioned the legitimacy of this decision. They argued that if Senegal had indeed committed a serious infraction, the referee and match organizers should have either halted the game or declared a forfeiture immediately, rather than waiting until after the match concluded to amend the result following Morocco’s appeal.
The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently confirmed its intention to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have even indicated that the Senegalese national team is contemplating withdrawing from future CAF competitions due to what they perceive as unjust treatment.
This incident severely damages the reputation of African football, especially since the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is widely regarded as the continent’s most esteemed national team competition. Many fear that if this crisis persists, the prestige and competitive integrity of CAF-organized tournaments could be significantly jeopardized in the coming years.
