Sénégal’s push for sovereign financing at the africa forward summit

This morning, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko officially oversaw the departure ceremony for the Senegalese delegation heading to Nairobi. This significant “Africa Forward” summit, hosted in Kenya until May 13, 2026, convenes heads of state, international funders, and key private sector stakeholders. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who is already present, will be joined by a ministerial team and financial experts, all committed to championing a transformative perspective on the global stage.

Prior to their departure, the head of government emphatically articulated a clear directive, consistent with the nation’s sovereignty agenda: “Our objective in Nairobi is to uphold a distinct principle: genuine development necessitates sovereignty, and sovereignty is unattainable without self-sufficient financing.” For Dakar, the focus extends beyond mere participation; it is about actively influencing the restructuring of the continent’s financial frameworks and eliminating restrictive conditionalities that burden African economies.

The “Africa Forward” summit introduces an innovative dialogue structure between the African continent and France. Discussions are set to address critical issues including debt restructuring, funding for essential infrastructure, the transition to sustainable energy, and matters of peace. Senegal aims to champion more equitable public-private partnerships (PPPs), facilitating resource mobilization while safeguarding the nation’s strategic decision-making autonomy.
