US reaffirms support for Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara

On the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, His Majesty King Mohammed VI received a special message from President Donald Trump, in which the American leader reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering stance on Western Sahara and its endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

The message underscored that the United States fully recognises Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorses Rabat’s proposal for autonomy as a serious, credible, and realistic framework for achieving a just and lasting solution.

President Trump emphasised that any alternative path would only prolong the current impasse, calling it unacceptable. He stressed the urgency of resolving the dispute, stating, “This disagreement must end now, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward this goal.”

In his congratulatory message to the Moroccan monarch and people, Trump also highlighted the 250-year history of strong ties between the two nations, describing the relationship as “built on trust and mutual respect.”

He praised King Mohammed VI’s wise leadership, calling him “a pillar of stability” in the region. The President commended Morocco’s pivotal role in fostering peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding shared security, particularly through the historic Abraham Accords.

The message also announced plans to deepen security cooperation across the Sahel region to enhance regional stability.

Strategic economic partnership between Morocco and the US

On the economic front, President Trump directed his administration to expand collaboration in key sectors, including technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defence. He specifically referenced efforts to promote economic and social development in Western Sahara as part of this partnership.

In closing, he expressed optimism for a “new era of shared progress”, urging a relationship focused on advancing the interests of both nations and their peoples.
