Trump backs Morocco’s Western Sahara sovereignty claim with strategic partnership

The United States has made its position clear: Washington recognises Morocco’s full sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Rabat’s autonomy proposal as the only viable path to a lasting resolution. This bold declaration came as US President Donald Trump conveyed a congratulatory message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day.

In his address, the American leader hailed the historic bond between the two nations, noting that “this year marks 250 years of American-Moroccan friendship — a relationship built on mutual trust and unwavering respect.” He emphasised that the US-Morocco partnership extends far beyond diplomacy, describing it as a cornerstone of regional stability in North Africa and the Sahel.

Addressing the decades-old Western Sahara dispute, Trump underscored that “any alternative approach only prolongs the status quo, which is unacceptable.” He stressed the urgency of resolving the conflict, stating that “this dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward that goal.”

The US President praised Morocco’s leadership in promoting peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding shared security interests. He highlighted Rabat’s pivotal role in the Abraham Accords, reinforcing its position as a key ally in the fight against terrorism and regional instability. Trump also pledged deeper cooperation to enhance security across the Sahel region.

Economic ties also took centre stage in the message. Trump commended Morocco’s forward-looking economic vision, calling it a catalyst for shared prosperity. He announced plans to accelerate joint initiatives aimed at boosting development in both countries — including within Western Sahara — through investments in critical sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, defence, and the extraction of vital minerals.

“American innovation and reliable technology will remain steadfast partners to Morocco for the next 250 years,” Trump declared, signalling a long-term commitment to technological collaboration. He concluded with a vision of a new era of cooperation, one that prioritises the interests and aspirations of both peoples.
