Tchad joins un climate resilience fund for cities at bakou forum
Chad has secured a significant milestone in its fight against climate change after being named the 11th eligible country for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program under the United Nations Green Climate Fund (GCF). This recognition was announced during the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, highlighting the country’s growing role in addressing urban climate challenges.
The move underscores Chad’s commitment to tackling pressing issues like catastrophic flooding, mass displacement, and the escalating impacts of climate variability in its urban areas. By joining the BCRUP initiative, Chad positions itself at the forefront of global efforts to protect vulnerable city-dwelling populations from environmental crises.
During the forum, a high-level delegation led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata met with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. Their discussions centered on urban resilience strategies and future collaboration opportunities. Following these talks, a preliminary project was greenlit for funding between $900,000 and $1 million, paving the way for additional financial support from UN-Habitat in the coming months.
