Sonko’s concerns over justice minister appointment spark political tensions
Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has raised serious concerns about the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Senegal’s new Minister of Justice. The decision has sparked immediate debate within political circles, with Sonko questioning whether this choice will truly serve the interests of his party and the nation.
The newly formed government is already facing its first wave of criticism, and the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Garde des Sceaux (Keeper of the Seals) has become a focal point of unease. Sonko argues that the new Justice Minister has been directly involved in sensitive legal cases that have previously strained relations between Pastef and certain judicial bodies.
« The selection for the Justice Ministry does not inspire confidence in our party, » Sonko stated. « The individual chosen has been at the center of legal proceedings that have impacted our political journey. » While he has reserved final judgment, the Pastef leader has made it clear that his party will closely monitor the new minister’s actions.
Sonko concluded, « We harbor doubts, but we will assess the situation. Should the need arise, we will take appropriate measures within the National Assembly. »
Prime Minister Al Amine Lô under scrutiny
Beyond the concerns surrounding Me Moussa Sarr, Ousmane Sonko has also addressed criticisms toward Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. Described as a technocrat upon his appointment, Sonko now accuses the Prime Minister of straying from his intended role by engaging in political maneuvering rather than focusing on governance.
« I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat and refrain from political games, » Sonko declared. « He was chosen for his expertise—he should stick to that. » The Pastef leader went further, hinting at insider knowledge about the Prime Minister’s actions. « I am aware of many things he has done. Out of courtesy, I have been patient, but he should not provoke me further. »
Pastef officials face internal backlash
Sonko’s criticisms extend beyond the government’s ranks. He has also targeted several Pastef members who accepted positions in the new administration, despite the party’s official stance. Among those named are Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé, who Sonko claims joined the government without consulting party leadership.
« Those who have taken seats in the government did so on their own accord, » Sonko warned. « At the right moment, their cases will be addressed. »
These remarks signal the early signs of political friction surrounding the new government, with the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr remaining the most pressing concern for Sonko and his party.
