Senegal’s political tensions: Sonko on potential Faye expulsion from Pastef

Internal party dynamics shape Senegal’s political future

Political discussions in Senegal remain dominated by the ongoing rift within the ruling Pastef party. While some members advocate for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s removal, Ousmane Sonko, the National Assembly President, has deferred the matter to party authorities, emphasizing a structured decision-making process.

Speaking to national media, Sonko underscored the party’s organizational rigor, noting that any exclusion would require adherence to established procedures. « This will be evaluated at the appropriate time, » he stated, stressing that the party’s rules—not personal opinions—will guide the decision.

« The Pastef is a highly structured and organized movement with clear protocols for addressing concerns and potential expulsions. The party’s integrity relies on these mechanisms, not on individual interpretations, » Sonko added.

He also clarified that such discussions are not currently on the agenda. « We are not at that stage yet, » he noted.

Sonko avoids moral accusations amid political disputes

Addressing allegations of « betrayal » against President Faye, Sonko opted for a political lens over moral judgment. « Betrayal is a moral concept, not a political one, » he asserted. « My focus remains on unfulfilled commitments and the lack of political will to implement them. »

Sonko highlighted concerns over broken promises made to the Senegalese people, questioning the sincerity of their implementation. « Some commitments remain unmet, and without genuine effort to honor them, the issue transcends morality, » he concluded.

Growing divisions within Senegal’s governing coalition

These remarks come amid escalating tensions among Senegal’s political leadership. For weeks, Pastef members have criticized President Faye for straying from the party’s original political vision that secured its victory.

Despite mounting pressure, Sonko insists on resolving the matter internally, avoiding hasty actions against the head of state.
