Senegal PM vows strict enforcement of anti-lgbtq+ laws under fire

Senegal’s prime minister reaffirms stance on homosexuality legislation

The Prime Minister of Senegal has once again underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening laws against homosexuality, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement. Amid growing international scrutiny, he has pushed back against foreign interference, asserting Senegal’s sovereignty on this delicate issue.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko speaking at a press conference

The Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has reiterated the executive’s unwavering position on tightening legislation concerning homosexuality in Senegal. His remarks come as part of an ongoing national conversation about legal application and government policy directions.

During his address, he stressed the universal application of laws, stating that no individual or group would be exempt from their reach. “We will not shield those who disrupt public order,” he declared. “Laws apply equally to all, without exception. If a law is passed, it must be implemented in its entirety, regardless of status or influence.”

He further argued that the current situation reflects a historical lack of decisive action on this matter. “This issue is not new,” Sonko stated. “Previous administrations failed to address it effectively. Had they acted sooner, we would not be facing this challenge today.”

The Prime Minister also addressed international criticism, particularly from Western partners. “No one in Senegal opposes these laws,” he asserted. “The only objections come from abroad, primarily from France. We reject any interference in our internal affairs.” He firmly dismissed suggestions of suspending legislative efforts, adding, “Even African intellectuals who meddle in our affairs will find no room for delay. There will be no moratorium on justice.”
