Senegal party pastef faces internal tensions over diomaye faye’s future
In Senegal, mounting pressure within the Pastef party has intensified calls for the exclusion of President Diomaye Faye, accused of abandoning the ideals that propelled him to power. During a joint interview on Monday, June 15, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko addressed these concerns with cautious deliberation, emphasizing that any decision would follow the party’s established procedures without haste.
«The situation will be assessed in due course,» Sonko stated, underlining the party’s structured approach to internal matters. «Pastef operates with clear texts and defined processes for addressing grievances and potential exclusions. This is not a matter for me alone—it’s the responsibility of the party’s governing bodies, which will determine the appropriate course when the time comes,» he explained. «We are not at that stage yet.»
When pressed on whether he believed Faye had «betrayed» the party’s political project, Sonko refrained from using the term, opting instead for a more measured political analysis. «Betrayal is a moral or emotional concept, not a political one. I prefer to focus on the tangible commitments made to the Senegalese people—many of which, I believe, have not been honored due to a lack of political will,» he asserted. «I leave the moral judgments to others; my concern is with the unfulfilled pledges and their consequences.»
