Saint-etienne nice match most unproductive in four years
Saint-Étienne vs Nice: the most unproductive professional football match in France since 2022
The first leg of the Ligue 1/Ligue 2 playoff between Saint-Étienne and Nice ended goalless with record-low attacking statistics.
Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium witnessed a football spectacle that offered little excitement this Tuesday evening. Saint-Étienne and Nice delivered their most lackluster performance yet in the first leg of the Ligue 1/Ligue 2 playoff (0-0). Over 90 minutes of play, neither team managed to muster a single shot on target. The combined expected goals (xG) value for both sides was a mere 0.41 — with Saint-Étienne contributing 0.11 and Nice 0.30. According to Opta data, this represents the lowest xG total in any full professional match in Ligue 1, Ligue 2, or their respective playoffs over the past four seasons.
Only two matches have come close to such offensive drought
This season, only two other fixtures have approached this level of attacking deficiency: Grenoble vs Bastia (0.55 xG, 0-0) on September 26, and Toulouse vs Strasbourg (0.56 xG, 1-0) on December 6. Earlier this year, on December 12, 2023, Metz and Brest also produced a similarly low-scoring encounter (0-1) with a total xG of 0.54 — a performance that was described at the time as an “achievement” in defensive solidity.
Saint-Étienne’s attacking struggles and defensive resilience
The match marked the third time in 20 years that Saint-Étienne failed to attempt a single shot on target. Their previous instances came in April 2017 at home to Paris Saint-Germain (0-5) and in December 2024 against Marseille (0-2), both away defeats. Yet, the lack of attacking output does not tell the whole story. Despite their struggles in front of goal, Saint-Étienne maintained one of the strongest defensive records in France. Their 15 clean sheets this season place them second only to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.
The absence of clear-cut chances and the rarity of such defensive dominance paint a picture of a match that was not just dull, but historically unproductive in terms of footballing action.
