Rabat archbishop faces sexual misconduct allegations, vatican launches inquiry

At least five women have stepped forward, levelling serious accusations of sexual violence against Cristobal Lopez Romero, the 74-year-old Archbishop of Rabat, Morocco. These grave allegations have prompted an official investigation by the Vatican, leading the influential cardinal to temporarily recuse himself from his duties this past Tuesday. The Spanish cleric steadfastly denies all charges.

I have personally engaged with a retired church member deeply involved in the Church community, who, at this juncture, has not authorized the full disclosure of her testimony. However, she conveyed experiencing repeated sexual assaults. Furthermore, I have reviewed the written testimony of another woman, submitted to the apostolic nunciature – the Vatican’s embassy in the Moroccan capital.

In her statement, she accuses the cardinal of “physical gestures” that she “perceived as inappropriate,” specifically mentioning “particularly forceful and prolonged embraces.” She also described an “attempt at physical intimacy that could be likened to an attempt” to kiss her, which she asserts she “barely managed to escape.” A trusted source within the archdiocese also confirmed that at least three additional women had reported experiencing “similar incidents,” with some of these revelations made during the sacrament of confession.

When contacted regarding these allegations, the Archbishop confirmed that he had “responded to [his] ecclesiastical superiors.” He further stated his commitment to “continue to cooperate fully with them in the investigation” that has been initiated, firmly asserting that he has “committed neither assault, nor violence, nor sexual harassment.” In a separate message addressed to the faithful of his diocese, he announced, “During this period of investigation, so as not to impede it, I will step back, not presiding over any public celebrations, and not participating in any pastoral activities.”

An influential cardinal

The Holy See has yet to provide an immediate response to requests for comment. Cardinals, chosen directly by the Pope, form the inner circle of the Church’s highest dignitaries, entrusted with assisting him in its governance. Those under 80 years of age also participate in the conclave to elect the Pope’s successor.

During the conclave held in May 2025, Lopez Romero was recognized as one of the most prominent and influential cardinals. Several media outlets had even identified him as a “papabile,” a term used for cardinals considered to be strong contenders for election to the papacy.
