PSG champions: 780 arrests and security challenges in Paris celebrations

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez addressed the press at 1:30 AM on Sunday to reveal shocking figures following Paris Saint-Germain’s historic Champions League victory. A total of 780 individuals were detained nationwide during the celebrations, with 416 of these arrests occurring specifically in the Paris metropolitan area.

The minister condemned the unacceptable disorder that marred the festivities, emphasizing that such behavior would not be tolerated. The arrests led to 457 individuals being placed in police custody—a 32% increase compared to the previous year’s Champions League final celebrations.

Security forces under strain

During the chaotic scenes, 57 police officers and gendarmes were injured while attempting to maintain order. The minister highlighted that while the celebrations were predominantly peaceful, the security forces had anticipated and prepared for potential disturbances.

In addition to the arrests, authorities reported a fatal motorcycle accident on the Paris ring road during the early hours of Sunday morning. A 2002-born motorcyclist reportedly struck concrete blocks while exiting the outer ring road toward Porte Maillot, leading to a severe crash.

The celebrations also saw a separate incident involving a hit-and-run driver who lost control of his vehicle and struck a terrace in the capital, injuring two pedestrians. The minister confirmed that the most seriously injured victim was not in critical condition at the time of his statement.

A stabbing victim in critical condition

Another disturbing incident involved a stabbing in central Paris, where a victim was reported to be in critical condition. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack as celebrations unfolded across the city.

Massive security deployment

The French Interior Ministry had implemented an unprecedented security plan for the Champions League final celebrations in Paris. With over 22,000 police officers and gendarmes mobilized nationwide—including 8,000 dedicated to maintaining order in Paris and its surrounding areas—the authorities were determined to ensure public safety during the festivities.

These measures were part of a broader strategy that also covered simultaneous major events in the capital, including a rugby match, the ongoing French Open tennis tournament, and several high-profile concerts featuring artists such as Aya Nakamura and Damso.
