Over 300 civilians killed by ADF rebels in DRC this year

In a stern warning issued by United Nations officials, the escalating violence attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels has left a devastating toll on civilian lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to the latest figures, over 300 people have been killed by these militants since the beginning of the year, with the most recent attack occurring in the early hours of May 31st in Ngadi, a small village situated near the city of Beni in North Kivu province.

Local authorities confirmed that the assault resulted in the deaths of 15 civilians and one soldier, underscoring the relentless brutality of the ADF’s campaign. The rebels have intensified their operations in the Beni region, where reports indicate that more than 40 civilians were killed within a span of just three days last week.

Originating in the mid-1990s, the ADF has long been entrenched in the eastern regions of the DRC, where their insurgency has resulted in the tragic loss of thousands of innocent lives. The group’s affiliation with the Islamic State in 2019 further amplified their threat, as they were designated as the Islamic State’s ‘Central Africa Province,’ with several of their attacks subsequently claimed by the extremist organization.
