Ousmane Sonko outlines Pastef’s financial independence and future vision in Mbacké
During a two-day visit to the Diourbel region for the « 48 hours of Pastef » event, party leader Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed his commitment to financial autonomy and outlined his vision for the future of Senegal’s political landscape. Addressing crowds in Touba and Sadio, he emphasized the movement’s grassroots financing model and reflected on the trajectory of Senegal’s leadership since the historic March 2024 transition.
Grassroots financing as the backbone of Pastef
The leader of Pastef made a point to clarify how his party sustains its operations, countering criticisms about political funding. Speaking to a packed audience in Touba, he underscored that the party relies solely on contributions from its members, rejecting any dependence on state resources.
« Pastef is not a party that draws from public funds to finance its activities. That would be against our principles, » he declared, reinforcing his message of transparency and self-reliance. Addressing skepticism about the surge in membership, he added, « Before 4 p.m. today, all 13,000 membership cards issued had already been purchased. We had to place a new order in Dakar to meet the demand. » His remarks highlighted both the party’s popularity and its disciplined financial approach.
Sonko also urged his supporters to remain focused and avoid engaging in unnecessary confrontations. « Do not fight with anyone. Ignore provocations. If peace prevails in Senegal, Pastef will claim victory in every election. No vote will slip through its grasp, » he asserted.
Reflections on power and the 2024 transition
In Sadio, Sonko delivered a more analytical speech, revisiting the political shift that reshaped Senegal’s leadership in March 2024. He recalled his pivotal role in selecting Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the substitute candidate after his own eligibility was contested. For Sonko, this decision was not just strategic but a testament to the movement’s deep-rooted legitimacy and collective will.
The address also subtly questioned the current direction of the executive, hinting at a perceived gap between the party’s founding principles and the actions of today’s government. His tone suggested a cautious optimism, acknowledging the challenges while reaffirming his long-term vision for the nation.
2026 and 2029 elections: a roadmap to consolidation
Sonko framed the upcoming 2026 and 2029 elections as critical milestones in completing the political transformation he initiated. While acknowledging that 80% of the movement’s political objectives had been achieved under his leadership, he positioned himself as the guardian of Pastef’s core ideals.
« The fight is not over. The real work begins now, » he told supporters, signaling that the movement’s next phase would demand even greater unity and resolve. His message resonated with the rank and file, reinforcing the idea that Pastef’s journey is far from over and that its future remains firmly in their hands.
