Ouagadougou presses African Union for transformative reforms

During a pivotal meeting in Ouagadougou on July 15, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré hosted Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, President of the African Union Commission, as part of a regional tour covering Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso—the three nations forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

The discussions centered on strengthening the partnership between the African Union and Burkina Faso, with a special focus on the broader Sahel region. Key priorities included assessing the current political and security landscape, evaluating Burkina Faso’s bilateral relations with neighboring countries, and analyzing the ongoing ECOWAS-AES dialogue process.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf outlined the African Union’s strategic framework for the Sahel, structured around three core pillars: governance, security, and development. He emphasized the AU’s commitment to revitalizing cooperation with Burkina Faso by accelerating the deployment of specialized AU agencies and launching high-impact initiatives tailored to address grassroots challenges.

In response, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré highlighted the origins of the AES, tracing its formation to the continent’s failure to provide adequate solidarity amid escalating security threats. To rebuild mutual trust, he urged the AU to implement unbiased, far-reaching reforms that prevent further disillusionment among member states forced to take unilateral measures to protect their citizens and assert sovereignty.

The Burkinabè diplomat proposed a modernized AU model, prioritizing financial autonomy to reduce reliance on external funding that often constrains strategic decision-making. He also advocated for strategic communication as a vital tool to showcase member states’ achievements and counter external media distortions.

Traoré further stressed the need for an inclusive, grassroots-oriented diplomacy within the AU, ensuring that regional voices shape the organization’s future direction.
