Niger: surge in displaced persons in western town amid armed group threats

A significant influx of internally displaced persons has been reported in Téra, a western town in Niger, following intensified threats from armed groups in the region. Local sources confirm that the town and its outskirts are now overcrowded, as displaced families continue to arrive from surrounding villages in the southern part of the department since late last month.

The situation is particularly dire in Diagourou, a neighboring commune that is rapidly emptying as residents flee. Armed factions linked to the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) have reportedly issued ultimatums to residents in nearly three dozen villages, demanding their immediate departure. Located just 10 kilometers from Téra, Diagourou sits near a critical military outpost—Zone 9 Defense Area—along the right bank of the Niger River. This tri-border region, shared with Burkina Faso and Mali, remains a hotspot for violence involving both JNIM and the Islamic State in the Sahel (IS Sahel).

Displaced families face dire living conditions

Testimonies from the ground reveal that displaced individuals, including women and children, are living in extremely precarious conditions in Téra. Many have no shelter, sleeping in open spaces or on unoccupied plots, while others rely on the hospitality of host families. The lack of adequate resources and infrastructure has compounded the crisis, leaving communities vulnerable to further hardship.

While precise figures on the latest waves of displacement remain unavailable, reports indicate that thousands of people have been forced to abandon their homes in Diagourou alone.
