A jihadist assault on Friday claimed the lives of approximately ten Nigerien soldiers at a military outpost near N’Guigmi in the Diffa region.

The assault on the military position

Boko Haram militants launched an attack against a Forces of Defense and Security outpost situated close to N’Guigmi, a key garrison town within the Diffa region. This strategic location, bordering Lake Chad, serves as a critical frontier point connecting Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. The incursion, which unfolded on Friday morning, resulted in substantial losses among the military ranks.

Witness accounts and casualty toll

Local residents provided accounts of the tragic event. An individual from N’Guigmi, speaking anonymously for security reasons, confirmed that “around ten soldiers perished in this Friday morning attack by Boko Haram in the vicinity of N’Guigmi.” The same witness added that “casualties were also inflicted upon the assailants”
, and that “the army is currently engaged in extensive sweep operations.”
Reports circulating on social media from city residents suggested an even higher death toll, indicating that “ten military personnel and four members of the national guard were killed.”

While not providing specific figures, Niger’s national press agency acknowledged that the victims “lost their lives following an attack by elements of the Boko Haram sect on the periphery of N’Guigmi”
. General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, the governor of the Diffa region, was present at the burial of the fallen soldiers just hours after the assault.

Security context in the Sahel

N’Guigmi has unfortunately evolved into a significant jihadist stronghold since 2009, harboring both Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) combatants. The vast expanse of Lake Chad, with its intricate network of water and marshlands, serves as a crucial sanctuary for these armed groups, enabling them to launch cross-border incursions into the surrounding nations. In response to this persistent threat, the nations within the Lake Chad Basin have reactivated their multinational joint force, originally established in 1994, bolstering West Africa Sahel news efforts. Furthermore, Chad initiated air strikes and ground operations in mid-May, targeting Boko Haram positions on remote islands within the lake, with vital support from Nigeria and Niger. However, Niger faces a dual challenge; its western regions are also contending with violence from jihadist factions aligned with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization. The military regime, which assumed power in July 2023, continues to grapple with the formidable task of containing these escalating attacks, highlighting the complex political Sahel and security Sahel dynamics.
