Morocco reaffirms Skhirat agreement as key to Libya political resolution at African Union
Morocco has reiterated its commitment to a political solution in Libya during a session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, highlighted the kingdom’s mediation efforts, from the Bouznika meetings to recent talks between representatives from Tripoli and eastern Libya.
Arrouchi stressed that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on 17 December 2015 under UN auspices, remains a key framework for achieving a lasting resolution to the Libyan crisis. He also underscored the importance of preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The ambassador expressed Morocco’s appreciation for the African Union’s efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly initiatives aimed at a political settlement in Libya.
He recalled the meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten that led to an agreement signed on 7 January 2026 in the Libyan capital between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the government based in eastern Libya.
Arrouchi further highlighted Morocco’s role in fostering dialogue and rapprochement among Libyan parties, noting that these efforts are grounded in international legality, the Skhirat Agreement, and the Bouznika understandings. He reaffirmed the need to continue pursuing a political solution, steering clear of military options.
