Mauritania seeks Gabon’s backing for OIF leadership bid
Deep-rooted ties between Gabon and Mauritania have taken another step forward with a high-level meeting in Libreville. His Excellency Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of Gabon, received the Mauritanian Special Envoy, Ms. Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, who carried a personal message from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
The Mauritanian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between both nations. This partnership, rooted in mutual respect and shared values, has consistently demonstrated its strength through ongoing dialogue on regional priorities.
During the discussion, Ms. Laghdaf formally presented Mauritania’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). The proposal, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, outlines a strategic vision built on three pillars: coherence, balance, and practical utility that directly serves member states.
The meeting underscored the robust and seamless diplomatic relations between Gabon and Mauritania. President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s commitment to consensus-based governance and collaborative decision-making, principles that guide the country’s continental diplomacy.
This engagement reflects Gabon’s proactive diplomatic approach, as it continues to expand its African partnerships while championing a dynamic and development-focused Francophonie.
