Mali neutralizes key jihadist leader in precision drone strike

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have confirmed the elimination of a high-ranking jihadist commander linked to the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) during a targeted drone operation. The strike took place on June 3 in Mougnan, a locality approximately 40 kilometers from Djenné in central Mali.

The individual, identified by military sources as Oumar Kéréna—also known by the aliases Farouk and Housseini Mawdo—was a former member of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO). Over time, he rose to prominence within jihadist factions operating across Mali and neighboring Burkina Faso.

Jihadist networks disrupted in central Mali

According to the Malian General Staff, the commander played a pivotal role in coordinating armed activities across multiple regions, including Sikasso, Koutiala, and parts of Burkina Faso. His elimination is expected to significantly weaken the operational capacity of the JNIM coalition, which remains the most active jihadist alliance in the Sahel and maintains ties to Al-Qaeda.

Bamako intensifies counter-terrorism efforts

This operation follows a bold security initiative announced by Malian authorities on June 4. The government introduced an unprecedented reward system offering up to two billion West African CFA francs for credible intelligence leading to the capture or elimination of top-tier armed group leaders. The highest bounty targets Iyad Ag Ghali, Mali’s most-wanted fugitive and a key figure in the JNIM hierarchy.

The military’s announcement underscores the escalating pressure against jihadist networks amid a surge in armed attacks and persistent security threats in central and northern Mali. The operation reflects Bamako’s determination to dismantle terrorist infrastructures and restore stability in conflict-affected zones.
