Lfp rejects ol’s request to postpone ligue 1 opener

Olympique Lyonnais’ (OL) request for a match postponement was contingent on a specific scenario: their qualification for the UEFA Champions League playoffs. To reach the prestigious group stage of the Champions League, the Lyon squad must first navigate the third preliminary round, with matches scheduled for August 4 or 5 (first leg) and August 11 or 12 (return leg). Should they advance, they would then compete in the playoffs, the final hurdle before the Champions League proper, with the first leg on August 18 or 19 and the decisive return leg on August 25 or 26.

The core issue arises from the Ligue 1 opening day fixture, slated for August 22. This date falls directly between the two critical Champions League playoff encounters. It was precisely to avoid this demanding fixture congestion that OL sought to reschedule their away game against Toulouse, believing a less congested calendar would significantly enhance their prospects of securing a coveted spot in the Champions League group stage.

Club officials from Lyon also emphasized that OL’s participation in the Champions League would yield substantial benefits for the entirety of French football, underscoring the broader impact of their European success.

However, following a meeting this Monday, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ultimately declined OL’s appeal. The governing body notably expressed concerns about commencing the Ligue 1 season with a deferred fixture, especially given that the entire championship is set to be broadcast on its newly launched platform.

Consequently, barring any unforeseen alterations to the schedule, should Olympique Lyonnais successfully reach the Champions League playoffs, they will face a grueling week. This intense period will involve playing a European match, followed by their Ligue 1 away fixture in Toulouse, and then immediately the return leg of their European playoff tie.
