Legal action launched over remarks on ‘dirty money’ in Touba

Legal proceedings have been initiated following statements attributed to Ousmane Sonko regarding alleged inflows of ‘dirty money’ into the sacred city of Touba. A formal complaint has been filed with the Dakar prosecutor’s office by the Collective of the Grandsons of Serigne Touba, seeking an immediate investigation into the claims.

The complaint, dated 14 July 2026 and received by the prosecutor the following day, was submitted by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso. It centers on remarks made by Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters in Dakar, where he reportedly stated that ‘dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba.’

The complainants argue that these remarks tarnish the honour, dignity, and moral standing of Touba, a city founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba on principles of faith, integrity, justice, and devotion. They assert that the allegations cast an unjustified shadow over the city’s spiritual reputation and the integrity of its residents.

Demands for clarity and accountability

The Collective is urging the prosecutor to swiftly launch an investigation to determine the context, accuracy, and implications of Sonko’s statements. Their request includes an official hearing for Sonko, where he would be required to clarify his remarks and provide any supporting evidence. Additionally, they seek a thorough examination of all relevant materials to verify whether the claims hold any legal weight.

The complaint does not yet specify legal charges but suggests potential offenses such as defamation, spreading false information, or violations of public order. The prosecutor will evaluate the findings before determining whether to pursue formal proceedings.

The plaintiffs have announced they possess video recordings, transcripts, and press clippings as corroborating evidence. These materials are intended to substantiate their claims and shed light on the true nature of the statements made.
