Joint military offensive pushes Boko Haram from Lake Chad strongholds

Militants associated with the Boko Haram jihadist group have reportedly abandoned numerous strongholds situated within the Lake Chad basin. This exodus follows a sequence of intensive aerial bombardments and ground assaults, jointly orchestrated by military forces from Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, as confirmed by local accounts and a Nigerian security official.

Strikes target jihadist strongholds

Since Friday, Chadian military forces have been conducting precision strikes against Boko Haram positions located on remote islands across Lake Chad. This expansive wetland area spans the borders of Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. Multiple local informants indicate that jihadists have evacuated islands such as Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, and Gashakar, departing in small boats accompanied by their families. Furthermore, reports suggest direct confrontations between Chadian soldiers and jihadist fighters on Kaukeri Island, a location believed to be a key stronghold for the group within the region.

Fishermen caught in the crossfire

These military engagements have unfortunately impacted civilian populations. Dozens of Nigerian fishermen operating on islands under Boko Haram’s control are reported to have lost their lives during the bombardments. Videos reviewed by a news agency depicted several severely injured individuals receiving medical attention at a hospital in Bosso, Niger. In this particular area, many fishermen persist in their trade within jihadist-influenced territories, where they are compelled to pay illicit taxes levied by Boko Haram.

Retaliation follows deadly assaults

These recent military actions serve as a direct response to a series of brutal attacks targeting the Chadian armed forces. Just last week, Chad declared three days of national mourning following an ambush that resulted in the deaths of two generals. Days prior, an assault on a military outpost situated along the shores of Lake Chad claimed the lives of at least 24 Chadian soldiers. A Nigerian intelligence source revealed that the ongoing aerial strikes are a coordinated effort involving Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, with each nation deploying two combat aircraft.

A persistently destabilized region

The jihadist insurgency, spearheaded by Boko Haram and its rival, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions throughout the Lake Chad basin since 2009. In response to the escalating violence impacting neighboring countries, regional states have reactivated their Multinational Joint Task Force to intensify efforts against these armed jihadist factions.
