Jnim claims deadly double attack in western niger
The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) has released a statement claiming responsibility for two separate operations conducted in the last 24 hours. Reports indicate at least three deaths and material damage in the Touré and Say areas.
Persistent Security Pressure in the “Three Borders” Area
The security situation remains volatile in western Niger. In a message disseminated through its usual propaganda channels, JNIM (Jamāʿat Nuṣrat al-Islām wal-Muslimīn), Al-Qaeda’s main armed branch in the Sahel, claimed to have struck Nigerien defense and security forces on two strategic axes.
Improvised Explosive Device on the Touré Road
The first reported attack involves the use of an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Touré road. Although the terrorist group did not immediately specify the number of casualties for this specific action, it emphasized that it targeted a patrol convoy. The recurrent use of homemade mines has become one of the main threats to Nigerien troops in this region, limiting freedom of movement on unpaved roads.
Deadly Ambush in the Say Sector
Further south, in the Say sector, the group claims an ambush that resulted in the deaths of three soldiers. This area, located near the W Park, has for several years been the scene of regular incursions by armed groups seeking to establish sanctuaries in the forest areas bordering Burkina Faso and Benin.
Analysis: A Well-Established Operating Method
This double offensive illustrates JNIM’s harassment strategy. By combining the use of mines (IEDs) and mobile ambushes, the insurgents seek to:
- Disrupt logistical flows between urban centers.
- Exhaust security forces through a war of attrition.
- Maintain a symbolic presence in rural areas peripheral to the capital, Niamey.
Authorities’ Reaction
As of now, the Nigerien Ministry of Defense has not yet issued an official statement to confirm or deny the toll claimed by the jihadist organization. The Nigerien authorities, engaged in a vast security restructuring since the arrival of the CNSP in power, continue to reinforce troops in the area on the right bank of the Niger River.
Vigilance remains essential for transporters and civilians traveling on these routes, as the terrorist threat continues to weigh on regional stability.
