In Mali, the africa corps falters: a strategic blow to vladimir poutine’s military ambitions

« C’est un échec » : au Mali, la débâcle d’Africa Corps, vitrine militaire de Vladimir Poutine

The recent recapture of Kidal, a historically significant Touareg stronghold in 2023, has dealt a severe blow to Russian forces operating in Mali. This significant Africa Corps Mali setback not only challenges Vladimir Poutine’s military showcase in the region but also tarnishes the Kremlin’s perception of power on the international stage.

A scene unfolding on Sunday, April 26, in Kidal, northern Mali, vividly illustrates this tactical reversal. A column of military pick-up trucks was observed hastily departing the area, met by the triumphant cheers of Touareg rebels from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA). On board these vehicles were personnel from the Africa Corps, the Russian-backed military entity supporting the Malian junta. While the withdrawal was reportedly calm, a result of a prior agreement, it came at the cost of undeniable humiliation. According to reports, the soldiers were disarmed and individually tallied as they relinquished a crucial strategic position.

As the Africa Corps withdrew, the jubilant rebels defiantly waved a French flag. This act served as a potent provocation and a pointed reference to the recent historical context of the region. Djenabou Cissé, an associate researcher at the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique, highlights the gravity of this event: “The only true strategic success the Russians had achieved since their arrival in Mali in 2021 was precisely the capture of Kidal, a historic Touareg bastion.” Its subsequent fall, therefore, represents a profound repudiation of their military efforts and underscores the challenges faced by Russian forces in Mali.
