Guinean special forces captivate Abidjan during independence parade

Abidjan – A contingent of one hundred and fifty elite soldiers, clad in combat fatigues and camouflage gear, marched with weapons at the ready, their faces obscured by masks and balaclavas, distinctive berets topping their heads. Led by a coordinator proudly bearing the red, yellow, and green national flag, with sharpshooters positioned behind, this specialized unit moved in unison to its renowned “Chameleon Step,” a unique and rhythmic pace.

The Special Forces of the Republic of Guinea received thunderous applause from the gathered crowds, punctuated by enthusiastic standing ovations and crisp military salutes from the official tribune. Their impressive procession was a highlight of Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations, marking a significant moment of regional camaraderie and security cooperation in West Africa.

Concluding the parade of international contingents in Abidjan on Friday, August 7th, their appearance garnered widespread attention. Across television broadcasts and various social media platforms, journalists, bloggers, and online users alike lauded the formidable display by the Guinean detachment, highlighting its impact on regional security perceptions.

“I am Ivorian, but for me, this was the finest parade. Moreover, with such composure, I can’t stop watching it. I even downloaded the video. Thank you, Guinea,” remarked Deloy Dadié, clearly captivated by the performance of the Guinean special forces.

Brice Kouadio echoed this sentiment, declaring, “The best for me this year: imposing, powerful, fierce, and elegant!”

Constant Silué went further, drawing a comparison between the Guinean contingent and the Ivorian army. “I admired the Guinean army’s parade more than our own. This is my first time witnessing the Guinean Special Forces. It was magnificent. Thank you so much, Guinea. You are true and sincere neighbors,” he expressed.

Back in Guinea, the images of the parade sparked a wave of national pride. Bory Diallo commented, “The sub-region is truly impressed by the Guinean army’s capabilities, especially in security Sahel contexts.”

Ibrahima Bah highlighted the profound symbolic significance of Guinea’s participation. “Maintaining strong relations with neighboring countries is vital. With a substantial Guinean community residing in Côte d’Ivoire, witnessing our military parade on such an occasion fills us Guineans, particularly those living in this beautiful nation, with immense pride,” he articulated.

This sentiment resonated with Sekou Moriba, who added, “Despite everything, seeing them fills our hearts with a distinct sense of pride.”

This is not the first instance where the Guinean Special Forces have seized public attention. Since their notable debut on October 2, 2018, during Guinea’s own independence celebrations, this elite unit has consistently established itself as one of the nation’s most spectacular and highly regarded military formations, a testament to their professionalism and discipline in West Africa.
