Gabon and Sierra Leone strengthen ties during historic state visit

In a landmark diplomatic engagement, Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Sierra Leone’s Head of State Julius Maada Bio convened a pivotal bilateral meeting at Freetown’s State House. This high-level discussion marked the culmination of a state visit launched on August 2, aimed at deepening the Libreville-Freetown axis and reinforcing Gabon’s footprint in West Africa. The initiative seeks to position this economically vibrant corridor as a blueprint for Central Africa, where integration efforts often face bureaucratic hurdles.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a robust partnership grounded in shared progress and mutual prosperity. This strategic collaboration aims to unlock tangible benefits for citizens of both nations, signaling a new era in Gabon-Sierra Leone relations.

President Bio expressed his appreciation for his counterpart’s visit, stating, “Your state visit to our beloved Sierra Leone underscores the enduring bond between our nations. We remain dedicated to nurturing deeper cooperation.” He further urged the Gabonese delegation to “experience Sierra Leone’s renowned hospitality.”

The discussions also highlighted converging perspectives on pressing regional and global challenges, including climate resilience, maritime security, and cross-border crime prevention.

As the visit draws to a close, President Oligui Nguema is scheduled to depart Sierra Leone today. He arrived on August 2 accompanied by First Lady Zita Oligui Nguema, greeted upon landing by Sierra Leone’s Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh. The Gabonese leader received full military honors and traditional welcomes from local communities, reflecting their shared vision for a unified future.

Following his departure, President Oligui Nguema will proceed to Abidjan, where he will serve as the guest of honor at ceremonies marking Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th anniversary of gaining international sovereignty on Friday.
