First Senegalese fans return home after detention in Morocco
The initial group of Senegalese football enthusiasts who were detained in Maroc following disturbances at the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) arrived this Thursday at the Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) in Diass. Abdoulaye Dieng, Ibrahima Diop, and Aziz Wade landed at 6:25 PM via a Royal Air Maroc flight, where they were met with a warm reception from a large gathering of people.
Context of the arrests in Rabat
These three citizens were part of a larger group of 18 supporters taken into custody during the final match between Sénégal and Maroc. They faced sentencing by the Rabat Court of Appeal for acts categorized as “hooliganism.” These charges included inciting public disorder, launching projectiles, destroying sports facility equipment, and committing acts of violence against security personnel.
Having finished their three-month prison sentences, they were granted their freedom on April 18. Regarding the remaining 15 supporters still in Maroc, their sentences, which were upheld during the appeal process, vary between six months and one year of firm imprisonment. Their repatriation to Sénégal will take place in stages as their specific sentences come to an end.
